MidAmerica Award

Each year, the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature presents the MidAmerica Award to someone who has made distinguished contributions to the scholarship and/or study of Midwestern literature.

Nominations can be sent to the SSML email account at ssmlmidwestlit [at] gmail [dot] com by May 1. Please include your name (as nominator) and a brief, 250-word statement regarding the nominee’s qualifications for the award. Only SSML members are eligible to make nominations.

2024 MidAmerica Award

Anne Ransford Wins the 2024 MidAmerica Award

Anne Ransford will be the recipient of the 2024 MidAmerica Award. Ms. Ransford served as president of the Friends of Theodore Roethke Foundation for twenty-five years and led the successful effort to save the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet’s childhood home in Saginaw, Michigan, as well as that of the poet’s uncle, Carl Roethke, next door. This foundation not only maintains those homes but also promotes Theodore Roethke’s legacy in his hometown and internationally, while providing both virtual and on-site literary, cultural and educational events. Since 1977, The Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature has given the MidAmerica Award for distinguished contributions to the study of Midwestern Literature. Past recipients include John T. Flanagan, Donald Pizer, James R. Shortridge, Arnold Rampersad, and Jon K. Lauck.
